"Musaafir" is an Urdu/Hindi word, which means "traveler" or "wanderer." The word "artist" simply means "artist." My journey into art therapy commenced years ago, dispelling many misconceptions along the way. I used to perceive 'art and artists' as distinct entities, much like today's renowned musicians, songwriters, painters, and sculptors who dedicate themselves entirely to their craft, tirelessly working 24/7 with an unwavering focus on their art. I considered myself unqualified to speak as an artist under such a narrow definition. However, this perspective was flawed. The exploration of "Musaafir Artist" during my art therapy journey expanded my understanding of the terms "art" and "artist" like an ocean. Art can take any form, and anyone can be an artist; self-awareness is key.
The concept also symbolizes the "Journey of Healing" that the "Traveller Artist" has undertaken since childhood. Life presented numerous challenges, including gender discrimination, domestic violence, sexual abuse, accidents, and the death of a loved one. These experiences left me feeling distrustful, anxious, depressed, lonely, fearful, and uneasy. Despite being surrounded by close individuals, the pervasive loneliness reached a point where even blood relations felt alien. Even the relationship with oneself seemed unreliable, making it difficult to trust new connections. Extreme emotions resulting from these experiences posed obstacles in navigating childhood trauma. During that period, various art forms, such as mandala art, watercolor, collage, handicrafts, sculpture, dance, meditation, music, drama, photography, stone art, mind maps, yoga, exercise, and cooking, served as outlets for expression. When channeled in the right direction, these artistic endeavors transformed into beautiful replicas.
The "Musaafir Artist" series will feature insights from this exploration, delving into art therapy's meaning, significance, experiences, and research. It aims to provide valuable information about the world of art therapy.
